Steven Newell
During 1976 - 2014 Steven produced glassware for domestic use, employing small batch production methods in his London studios for a range of clients. These methods combined free blown glass and rudimentary moulds that gave each vessel a unique quality. The nature of this work meant collaborations were central to his practice, first through The Glasshouse Covent Garden, Glassworks (London) Ltd and ultimately Newell Glass and Art for Glass. This evolved into the design and making of mouth blown glassware for use in fine dining; he often worked directly with chefs and restaurants to produce tableware that reflected their menu concepts. This would lead to an integration of kiln formed techniques to extend the range . Many of the batch production were also sold through galleries, design shops and design fairs around the world..
1976 - 2014
Steven started testing methods of narrative expression after developing a love of working with handblown glass. Inspiration often comes from his love of the stories of ancient cultures and recurring narratives, he enjoyed weaving these with he own personal narratives. The technique of etching and sandblasting the surface of the glass was development during this period.
1978 - 2006
1990 - present
In the 1990s Steven began working on glass for architectural applications. This new method of making combined elements of the narrative work that was being developed with the handblown vessel series to create projects of scale and permanence. Inspiration often came from observation of traditional methods discovered on his travels around the cathedrals and churches of Europe.
